It's amazing to think that magnolia found in fossils dates as far back as 58 million years ago. Some believe that it was the Ice Age that decimated European magnolias. Magnolias are truly a majestic tree, associated with beauty, dignity and nobility. Though there are numerous varieties and species of magnolia, 90 in the United States, alone, this is the Southern Magnolia. It is the official state tree of Mississippi and the official state flower of Mississippi AND Louisiana. Of all the information gathered about this magnificent tree, there are a couple of truly astonishing titbits: unusually deep tap roots allow the tree to withstand most hurricanes in the prone areas in Mississippi and Louisiana; and the bark is fire-resistant, it doesn't burn like most other tree bark. Wide open, sweetly fragrant magnolia blossoms measure up to 8 inches across.
