Roses and castles were used to decorate narrowboats in the 19th century. Not just the narrowboats themselves but also virtually everything in the boat such as doors, drinking cans, lamps etc The title roses and castles is a little misleading. Although they make up the bulk of this art, it is not not limited to roses and castles, but also includes and has always included other elements such as flowers, lakes, rivers, churches, landscapes etc. Today this art is still very popular on British canals.
