Cape Kidnappers Postcard
Cape Kidnappers is made of sandstone, conglomerate, mudstone, river gravel, pumice, and silt. The cape was formed by erosion and uplift over millions of years. The cape has a distinctive shape, with two large rocks resembling haystacks near the headland. The cape is also prone to landslides and earthquakes. Cape Kidnappers or Te Kauwae-a-Māui is an extraordinary sandstone headland to the east of Hastings in Hawke's Bay. It was named by Captain Cook after an attempt by local Māori to abduct one of his crew. The cape is home to the largest and most accessible gannet colony in the world.
