Although, in general, life in San Miguel has become much more sophisticated, old-style cantinas can still be found in most of it's colonias. Some of these establishments, like El Gato Negro opened in 1921, have been fixtures here for decades. The cantinas take us back to an era when life was hard and men congregated at the local cantina to commiserate and drink tequila with sangrita. Another of the older bars in town, La Cucaracha, was once claimed to be one of the 10 best bars in the world by Esquire Magazine.
