As the story goes, a choirmaster in Cologne, Germany asked a local candymaker to create some sticks of candy for children, to keep the kids quiet during the Christmas Eve service at the church. To justify the giving of candy in church, the choirmaster asked the candy maker to put a hook on the end of each stick to resemble the crook or staff of a shepherd, thus relate to the traditional nativity scene. The white of the candy canes were said to represent the innocence of baby Jesus. Whether or not this tale about the origin of candy canes is true, these classic sweets have a long tradition, first recorded in association with Christmas in 1874.
