The family crest 'Matoni-Atariya' is also known as 'Matomon'. 'Mato' means 'target' or 'mark', and is associated with archery and firearms. The 'Atariya' crest was used as a shop name or trademark, symbolizing good fortune. It is believed to have become a formalized crest in the early modern period (according to 'Nihon no Monsho' by Ito Kosaku). The 'Mato' pattern used in designs is thought to have originated from the square-shaped target used in archery, and is considered to have become a family crest due to its martial connotations and the auspicious meaning of 'hitting the mark' for merchants (according to 'Kamon no Jiten' by Takazawa Hitoshi).
