Borobudur Indonesia Postcard

Borobudur is a monumental Mahayana Buddhist temple situated in Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia, constructed in the 9th century during the Sailendra Dynasty. It is the world's largest Buddhist temple, designed in the shape of a massive mandala, symbolizing the cosmos in Buddhist cosmology, and serves as a major pilgrimage site where devotees walk around the structure to achieve enlightenment. The massive complex consists of nine stacked platforms, six square and three circular, topped by a central dome surrounded by 72 bell-shaped stupas, each containing a statue of Buddha. The walls are adorned with approximately 2,672 intricate bas-relief panels that visually narrate Buddhist texts and life in ancient Java, providing an extensive and detailed visual history and spiritual guide.
