"Boat House American Flag" by Catherine Sherman. A folk art American flag painted on a wooden pallet hangs on the side of a boat house at a Midwestern lake. It's missing a few stars and stripes, but it's definitely charming. The official flag, adopted in 1960 with the arrival of Hawaii to the union, consists of thirteen horizontal stripes alternating red and white; in the canton, 50 white stars of alternating numbers of six and five per horizontal row on a blue field. Thirteen stripes symbolize the original colonies and 50 stars stand for the number of states in the union.
