The Blue Mosque, officially the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, is an iconic sight in Istanbul, distinguished by its six minarets and cascading domes. Its construction, commissioned by Sultan Ahmed I, sought to create a monument that would rival the nearby Hagia Sophia in grandeur.
The mosque's interior is decorated with thousands of Iznik tiles, predominantly featuring intricate floral and traditional Ottoman patterns in shades of blue and turquoise, from which it gets its popular name. Sunlight from over 200 stained-glass windows illuminates the massive prayer hall, creating a radiant and peaceful environment.
