Black Swallowtail Butterfly Pink Echinacea Flowers Postcard

A female black swallowtail butterfly looks for some sweet nectar from pink echinacea flowers. The black swallowtail is a New World butterfly, ranging from southern Canada to South America. This pretty lady is at the northern-most part of the range, in Quebec, Canada. There's not a lot of difference between male and female - the outsides of the wings look about the same - when they spread their wings, the male displays bright yellow markings while the female has paler yellow; she also has more blue in her lower wings, and she's a bit larger than the male. This butterfly is looking for nectar among pink (or purple) echinacea flowers and plants, a favourite food for many insects! With her wings spread you can see the "eyes" at bottom, orange black and white - both genders have them. Butterflies can be animal spirit guides or totem animals. Butterfly represents beauty and the arts, society, happiness and travel or journeying. In some cultures, butterflies are considered to be wandering souls and it's important not to harm them.
