There are a few black scoter ducks which live in the waters around Unalaska Island all year long, but most of the ducks migrate to Unalaska in late October or early November to spend the winter in the Aleutian Islands. In the spring the gypsy ducks return north to their nesting grounds in coastal mainland Alaska. This duck serenly paddling in the water is a male black scoter duck.
