Birthplace of Sir Walter Raleigh, Hayes Barton Postcard
Retouched and restored from a vintage ca 1900 postcard.
Sir Walter Raleigh was an English aristocrat, writer, poet, soldier, politician, courtier, spy, and explorer and cousin to Sir Richard Grenville. He is also well known for popularising tobacco in England.
In 1594, Raleigh heard of a "City of Gold" in South America and sailed to find it, publishing an exaggerated account of his experiences in a book that contributed to the legend of "El Dorado".
Hayes Barton is the birthplace of Sir Walter Raleigh and lies on the edge of Woodbury Common, near the village of East Budleigh. (East Devon)
