Birth of Venus is one of the best known examples of 19th century academic art. The painting was purchased by the emperor Napoleon III. About the artist: Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889) was a successful academic painter, his genre was Academicism, academic art is a style which practiced under the movements of Neoclassicism and Romanticism.
