Built by the emperor Tamerlane to honour his favourite wife, the Bibi-Khanym Mosque was once one of the largest and most magnificent mosques in the Islamic world. Its massive gateway and towering domes were designed to showcase the power and reach of the Timurid Empire.
Though partially restored, the ruins still convey a sense of grand scale and ambition. The contrast between the weathered stone and the brilliant blue mosaic work tells a story of both historical glory and the passage of time.
