Bialowieza National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and Biosphere Reserve, is one of the last and largest remaining parts of the immense primeval forest that once stretched across the European Plain. It is renowned for protecting a significant portion of this ancient woodland, a place where nature has taken its course almost undisturbed for centuries. The park's Strict Nature Reserve is accessible only with a guide, offering a rare glimpse into an untouched ecosystem of towering trees, fallen logs, and complex fungal and animal life, creating an atmosphere of deep tranquillity and timelessness. The park's most iconic resident is the European bison, or żubr, Europe's heaviest land animal. Decimated in the early 20th century, a successful breeding program in Bialowieza re-established the population in the wild, making the park a symbol of species conservation. Visitors can see these magnificent beasts, along with other forest wildlife like deer, wild boar, and many bird species, particularly in the European Bison Show Reserve. The town of Białowieża itself serves as the perfect base, with charming wooden architecture and a palpable connection to the ancient woods that surround it.
