Waves splash against limestone rocks jutting from the sand. Great Guana Cay, a barrier island, is a long, narrow islet, 7 miles (11 km) long, It is in the centre of the Abaco Islands. It is about 8 miles from Marsh Harbour on Great Abaco Island Unlike most other Caribbean islands, the Bahama islands are mostly formed of limestone rather than volcanic rock. Coral reefs on the limestone plateaus helped to form the Bahama islands. Sand on the islands’ beaches are made from coral, sea shells, and limestone pieces, and sections of limestone make up part of some shores. This photograph was taken in November 2017.
