Bearberries, Unalaska Island Postcard

Bearberry shrubs (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi L.) grow all over Unalaska Island in the tundra. The plant is only a few inches tall and produces pinkish-white flowers which are bell-shaped. The red berries which appear in fall are large in comparison to the size of the plant. The berries are not poisonous, but whether or not they are edible depends on how hungry you are.
