A brown bear with a salmon caught in the Brooks River during a salmon run in Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska. Alaska Peninsula brown bears (Ursus arctos gyas) or "peninsular grizzly" bears are very large, usually ranging in weight from 800 to 1,200 lb. Each summer large numbers of these bears congregate near Brooks Falls to fish for spawning salmon, which make up the majority of their diet in the summer.
