At this distance your eyes cannot focus on the image and they'll be looking somewhere behind the image. Now, slowly move away from the image, while trying to keep your gaze behind the image. At some point (will take practice) you will see the astonishing hidden 3D component of the image. Another method is to take an object and put it behind the image (about half of metre behind it). Now, look at the object behind the image while keeping the eyes focused at the image (look there while focusing here approach). Look "through" them. Well, this is actually what we are trying to achieve (look through the object by adjusting your gaze at a point behind the image). At some point you will be able to see the hidden image & it's astonishing when you actually resolve it! If you're not accustomed to looking at stereograms, this might take you some time. The first time I looked at a stereogram it took me the better part of an hour to finally be able to adjust my gaze correctly to see the embedded 3D image!
