Bayon Temple Cambodia Postcard

Bayon Temple, located within Angkor Thom, is renowned for the multitude of massive, serene stone faces carved into its many towers. These faces, thought to represent Avalokiteshvara or perhaps a deified King Jayavarman VII, look out in all four directions. Built in the late 12th or early 13th century, it is a quintessential example of Khmer architecture with its complex galleries, staircases, and intricate bas-reliefs detailing historical events and daily life. Unlike other temples in the Angkor complex that emphasize verticality, Bayon's design is focused on a central mass of towers, creating a dense and mystical forest of stone faces. Visitors navigate narrow passages and climb worn stairs, constantly watched by the enigmatic smiles of the carved countenances. As the sun sets, the warm light illuminates the faces, giving them a particularly serene and captivating expression, making it a favourite spot for sunset viewing and contemplative photography.
