Battle of Santo Domingo 1800s Postcard
Battle of Santo Domingo French and British ships
The Battle of San Domingo was a naval battle between French and British ships that took place on February 6, 1806. The battle was off the southern coast of the French-occupied Spanish colonial Captaincy General of Santo Domingo in the Caribbean. The battle was part of the Napoleonic Wars. The battle was notable for its severe fighting at close range. A force of nine French ships were found at anchor in San Domingo Roads. The French ships slipped their cables and made sail in a westerly direction, forming a line of battle close inshore. The British closed in on them in two lines to cut them off. The battle was a British naval victory.
