Battle of Paoli Postcard

The Battle of Paoli, also known as the Paoli Massacre, occurred during the American Revolutionary War on the night of September 20-21, 1777. It took place near present-day Malvern, Pennsylvania, and was a significant engagement between British forces under Major General Charles Grey and American troops commanded by General Anthony Wayne. The battle is infamous for the ruthless and controversial tactics employed by the British forces. Under the cover of darkness, Major General Grey's troops launched a surprise bayonet attack against the unprepared American soldiers who were encamped at Paoli Tavern. This brutal assault became known as the "Paoli Massacre" due to the savagery with which it was carried out. The British achieved a decisive victory, causing heavy casualties among the American forces. While it did not change the overall course of the war, the Battle of Paoli served as a stark reminder of the brutality and ruthlessness of warfare during the American Revolution, further fuelling American resolve in their fight for independence.
