Bass Reeves (1838–1910), an Arkansas native born into slavery, would rise to fame as one of the first African-American deputy U.S. Marshals west of the Mississippi River. He was well known for the number of outlaws he captured. This statue by Harold Holden, entitled, "Into the Territory," can be viewed at Ross Pendergraft Park in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
