Basilica Cistern, Istanbul, Marmara Postcard

Known as the 'Sunken Palace,' the Basilica Cistern is a massive underground reservoir built in the 6th century by Emperor Justinian. It features a forest of 336 marble columns, many of which were salvaged from older Roman temples, rising from the dark waters. The most famous elements are the two Medusa head pillar bases, positioned mysteriously at the back of the cistern. The soft, rhythmic sound of water dripping and the dim, atmospheric lighting create a hauntingly beautiful subterranean world hidden beneath the streets of Istanbul.
