Ballyhoo Mountain Behind Crab Pots Postcard

Ballyhoo Mountain stands above the north end of Dutch Harbour, Alaska. This photo was taken on the western beach of Dutch Harbour, with crab pots stored on the beach in the foreground. The top of Ballyhoo Mountain is visible, covered with the first snows of early winter. Ballyhoo Mountain is one of many landmark mountains found on Unalaska Island, which is a part of the Aleutian Island chain of Alaska. Ballyhoo Mountain got its name during the gold rush era of Alaska when miners passed through the port of Dutch Harbour on their way to the Yukon. As the ships left the bay, they had to pass by the mountain, and for good luck the miners would shout, "Ballyhoo!" Ballyhoo was a slang term in the gold fields for, "I've found gold."
