Bald Eagles on the Beach, Unalaska Island Postcard

Unalaska Island has over 600 bald eagles. These two adults and four juvniles have gathered on the beach where a local fisherman left some scraps from halibut caught near Unalaska Island. Bald eagles travel in family groups with the young eagles remaining in the company of their parents for several years. The spotted colouring of the four juvenile eagles is typical in their first year out of the nest. By their second year out of the nest, when they are three year olds, their feathers will turn a solid brown. It is not until the fourth year that a bald eagle begins to show the white head and tail feathers characteristic of its species. By the fifth year the head and tail feathers are completely white, marking the eagle as an adult.
