Bailey's Island Maine Postcard
This postcard features the coastline of Bailey's Island, Maine. Bailey's Island is an island on Casco Bay and a part of the town of Harpswell in Cumberland County, Maine. The story goes that in 1742, Reverend Timothy Bailey bought the island for a pound of tobacco and a gallon of rum from William Black who was the first settler on the island and a son of a freed slave, Black Will, from Kittery Maine. In another variation of the story, the Reverend's wife like the island so Bailey bribed municipal officials to find a flaw in Will's title to the island and award it to them instead. In any event, the Baileys took possession of the island and Black went to live on Orr's Island. From that time on, the island was known as Bailey's Island.
