Months ago, a friend asked me to paint this. She said that when we speak of Mary's mantle, we usually think about her veil. Apparently, in the olden days, the mantle refers to the fabric carrier Mama Mary uses to tote baby Jesus around (babies are carried this way to calm them, as they can snuggle close to the mother like in the womb). So when we pray to Mary asking her to cover us with her mantle, we are asking her to carry us close to her heart.
