This is a very ornate headstone for the grave of a coxswain who served on the Coast Guard vessel Bear. The U. S. R. C. Bear played a significant role in the history of Unalaska Island and Alaska and there have been documentaries on TV about the Bear. The epitaph reads: Axel E. Johanson, Coxswain U. S. R. C. Bear, Born in Sweden 1876, Died in Unalaska Sept. 24, 1905. He was 29 years old.
