In addition to the S-Bahn, the tram, the bus network and the Vienna-Baden local train, the Vienna-Baden metro is part of the public transport system of the Austrian capital, Vienna, and in 2015 it carried around 440 million passengers and 1.2 million passengers per day. After an "extended test operation with passengers" from 1976, the Vienna Metro was officially opened in 1978. The metro network has five lines and was formed partly from lines of the Vienna Electric Tramway, which was based on the steam city railway of 1898. The metro is operated by the Verkehrsgesellschaft Wiener Linie GmbH & Co KG, which is part of the Vienna Stadtwerke (Stadtwerke) and is owned by the City of Vienna.
