About This Design

Audubon Painted Bunting Birds is Wild Plum Tree Acrylic Tumbler

Audubon Painted Bunting Birds is Wild Plum Tree Acrylic Tumbler

This vibrant depiction showcases a flock of Painted Buntings perched in a wild fruit tree, beautifully blending art and nature. Comprising two older males with their unmistakable kaleidoscopic plumage, two younger males, and a single female, this flock represents the stunning diversity of this beloved species. Rendered as Plate 53 of John James Audubon's Birds of America series, this vintage masterpiece features the Chickasaw Plum tree, also known as the Cherokee Plum or Florida Sand Plum. This native tree, originally cultivated by Indigenous Americans, bears delicate blossoms and fruit that perfectly complement the brilliance of the birds. Often called the "Painted Finch" or the "Nonpareil," meaning "unrivaled," the Painted Bunting lives up to its name with its dazzling colours. The adult male displays a striking combination of a blue head, red throat and chest, and a bright green back, while the female and young males sport more subdued but equally beautiful hues. These secretive songbirds are often found in the brushy areas and woodland edges of the Southeast. While they prefer to stay low in dense cover, the males often serenade with their bright, warbling songs from treetops, either partially hidden among the leaves or perched boldly in the sunlight. Painted Buntings are a treasure for bird enthusiasts, with some lucky Floridians even welcoming them to their bird feeders in winter. This vintage art print captures the unrivaled beauty of these birds, making it a perfect addition to any collection or a thoughtful gift for nature and bird lovers alike.
