All hail, great master! I come to answer thy best pleasure!
Says the nature spirit Ariel in William Shakespeare's play The tempest. The spirit is bound to serve the magician Prospero, who rescued him from the tree in which he was imprisoned. From the mid-1600s to about 1930 the Ariel part was only played by a women. The postcard shows the English singer and actress Priscilla Horton in the role (William Macready's production,1838).
