Arcimboldo Spring. Oil painting on canvas from 1573. Giuseppe Arcimboldo was one of the most original and bizarre painters of the late Renaissance. Known during his lifetime for his elaborate portraits composed of flowers, vegetables, fruits, foods and other inanimate items, the Italian painter eventually fell into obscurity only to be resurrected in the twentieth century when the surrealists took an interest in his work. Spring is one of his seasonal portraits depicting spring covered in all sorts of beautiful flowers including daisies, roses, peonies, lilies and irises.
