A compounder is a pharmacist that mixes their own drugs. In the past, whenever you needed to cure something, you had to go to an apothecary. Before patent medicine, you had to get it mixed in a custom fashion. There were no regulations back then the FDA didn't come out till 1906, you could have gotten anything. You really had to take your chances, and even when they started to patent this medicine, there were still no regulations. But because there was nothing else to compare too, and you had to get the cure, you went there.
