An 1830 Pushkin play, an 1898 Rimsky-Korsakov short opera and the 1984 movie “Amadeus” want us to believe that Austrian Court composer Antonio Salieri was responsible for driving Mozart to his death, but this is a big a lie and a most glaring distortion of the facts. The success of the movie “Amadeus”, based on a Broadway play, has unfortunately left a long-lasting impression on the new generations. In reality, Salieri (1750-1825) was a composer of the old school who found it difficult to adjust to the new musical trends of the late 18th century. This did not prevent him from enjoying wide acclaim in Vienna, Paris and Italy.
