Anna's Hummingbird and Fuschia Postcard

Anna’s Hummingbird Calypte anna Length 4” Wingspan 5.25” A year round resident on the Pacific Coast, Anna’s winter further north then any other hummingbird species. This gives them a decided advantage over migratory species like the Rufous Hummingbirds. Breeding season which starts in early January can result in the first brood of the year fledging, before the Rufous have even started back from the sunny south. Male Anna’s hummingbirds perform a spectacular aerial dive, trying to impress a mate. They repeatedly rise high into the air then hurtle down low over the treetops, flaring their tail at the bottom of the dive to create a loud chirp.
