Angel with Crown of Thorns - Sant'Angelo, Rome Postcard

This postcard features the Angel with the Crown of Thorns on Ponte Sant’Angelo, one of Rome’s best-known Baroque bridge sculptures. Pope Clement IX commissioned Bernini in 1668 to devise ten angels bearing symbols of Christ’s Passion for the ancient crossing beside Castel Sant’Angelo. Bernini personally made the original Crown of Thorns angel, later moved for protection to Sant’Andrea delle Fratte while a copy remained on the bridge.
