Ancient Botanical Art Hemionite Fern Poster

A 16th century edition of 'De Materia Medica', or Herbal Medicine. Originally the work of Pedanius Dioscorides, (40 - 90 AD), a Greek physician and botanist considered to be the 'father of pharmacology'. These incredible watercolour illustrations are found in Italian doctor, Pietro Mattioli's, (1501 - 1577), version of the original book. The artwork created by botanist, Gherardo Cibo, (1512 - 1600), gives us a fascinating glimpse not only into botany but also architecture and life at that time. The illustration here features a Hemionite Fern.
