America's cup . . . the upset. Spinnaker flying, Australia II leads Liberty on a downwind leg of the America's Cup race in 1983. Australia II, skippered by John Bertrand and representing the Royal Perth Yacht Club, came from behind to defeat Dennis Conner and Liberty four races to three. Thus ended the longest winning streak in sports history with the New York Yacht Club having successfully defended the Cup since 1851. Australia II was awarded the ABC Wide World of Sports Athlete of the Year for 1983 for the accomplishment.
