Aleutian Fox, Unalaska Island Postcard
This Aleutian fox was on the beach turning over rocks to look for tideland crustaceans which resemble shrimp. It was springtime, so the fox was in the process of shedding its winter coat of fur. Foxes have a varied diet and have been known to eat blueberries when they are ripe. Unalaska Island is a part of a group of Aleutian Islands known as the Fox Islands because of the foxes which were imported by the Russians during their occupation of Alaska. The foxes served as a supplimental fur trade animal.
