Aiding a Comrade Vintage Western Poster

"Aiding a Comrade" was painted by American artist, Frederic Remington, in 1890. Remington painted depictions of the Old American West concentrating on images of cowboys, Indians, and the U.S. Cavalry. He took frequent trips in the 1890's throughout the U.S. and Mexico to gather ideas for his writing and his art. His collaboration with the writer in Harper's Weekly resulted in the first statement of the mythical cowboy in American literature, spawning the entire genre of Western fiction, films, and theatre that followed. The first American cowboys were both the ranchers who tended the cattle and horses of the American Revolutionary army on Long Island and the Mexicans who ranched in the Arizona and California territories. But their collaboration resulted in the fictional figure of an Anglo-Saxon cowboy of the Old West tending the ranches.
