This postcard has a photograph of William H. Carney, the first African American to earn the Medal of Honour - for protecting the American flag during the Civil War. He was born into slavery, was eventually granted freedom, moved to Massachusetts and joined the Union Army. He nearly lost his life, but not once did he allow the flag to touch the ground.
