Bâti par Richard Coeur de Lion, Château-Gaillard se dresse sur une falaise de calcaire, au-dessus de la Seine, près de la commune des Andelys. La construction, commencée en 1197, s’acheva moins de deux ans après. Ce qui fit dire au roi d’Angleterre et duc de Normandie (selon les commentateurs de l’époque) : « Comme elle est belle, ma fille d’un an ! ». Richard se serait également exclamé : « Quel château gaillard ! » L’ouvrage est classé au titre des monuments historiques depuis 1862. Voici la forteresse, reconstituée sous l'aspect qu'elle pouvait présenter dans les années qui suivirent la mort du roi Richard, peu avant que Philippe Auguste s’en empare en 1204.
