Adm. Dewey by Theobald Chartran Postcard

Admiral George Dewey at Manila Bay Postcard Admiral George Dewey, born on December 26, 1837, in Montpelier, Vermont, was a prominent figure in the American naval forces and is best known for his pivotal role in the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War. He served in various roles throughout the Civil War. His career began to ascend when he was promoted to the rank of commodore in 1896, and he was given command of the Asiatic Squadron. In this capacity, Dewey's name became synonymous with one of the most decisive naval battles in American history. In 1898, during the Spanish-American War, Admiral Dewey led his fleet into Manila Bay in the Philippines, where he engaged and decisively defeated the Spanish fleet in a stunning display of naval power. His famous command, "You may fire when you are ready, Gridley," set the stage for an overwhelming American victory. This victory not only solidified the United States' control over the Philippines but also marked the beginning of the end of the Spanish Empire's influence in the Asia-Pacific region. Dewey's triumph at the Battle of Manila Bay made him a national hero, and he was promoted to the rank of admiral, the first since the Civil War. Admiral Dewey continued his naval service until his retirement in 1903, capping a distinguished career marked by strategic brilliance and valour. His legacy is celebrated in American naval history, and he is remembered as the man who brought the United States to the forefront of international naval power during a critical period of expansion and global influence. He passed away on January 16, 1917, but his name and his accomplishments continue to be honoured by the United States.
