The monumental bust of Lincoln, the 16th U.S. president, was unveiled at the summit of U.S. 30 between Cheyenne and Laramie in 1959, to commemorate the former president’s 150th birthday. In 1969, the Abraham Lincoln Memorial Monument was moved about a mile to a rest area on the new Interstate 80, east of Laramie. The Lincoln Highway is one of the earliest transcontinental highway routes for automobiles across the United States. Conceived in 1912 by Indiana entrepreneur Carl G. Fisher, and formally dedicated October 31, 1913, the Lincoln Highway runs coast-to-coast from Times Square in New York City west to Lincoln Park in San Francisco, originally through 13 states. The Lincoln Highway followed Wyoming’s southern rail corridor. Although the Lincoln Highway lasted little more than a decade, the route lived on as U.S. Route 30.
