About Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and the Conservation Cotton Initiative (CCI)
In 2007, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and EDUN, an apparel company founded by Ali Hewson and Bono, established the Conservation Cotton Initiative (CCI). This collaboration aims to improve the livelihoods of communities in Africa by investing in sustainably harvested "conservation cotton." The program will promote development of eco-friendly cotton farming around high biodiversity areas to create sustainable livelihoods, enhance incomes and economic development, and improve resource management.
CCI promotes the farming of organic, conservation-friendly cotton around high biodiversity areas in Uganda, Zambia, and Madagascar. The "conservation cotton" produced by CCI farmers will directly benefit the conservation of wildlife and wild lands in areas of high biodiversity in Africa. Not only will the farmers enjoy health and economic benefits that come from eliminating the use of inorganic pesticides and fertilizer, they will also earn premium prices from high market demand for organic cotton and supporting, rotational crops and products.
