Maru ni ichi no ji mug

The kanji character "ichi no ji" or a single character was likely chosen as a crest because its strokes are clear and easily identifiable, and the character itself has martial and auspicious connotations. According to the "Reference Taiheiki," the character "ichi" was interpreted as "katakana shi," or "invincible," which was likely a reason for its selection as a crest. The fact that the character "ichi" was often used in the names of warriors during the Sengoku period, and that it was read as "katsu," or "victory," supports this interpretation. For example, the name of Yamauchi, the lord of Tsushima, was written as "一豊" and read as "Katsutoyo," while the son of Takigawa Kazumasu was named "一時" and read as "Katsutoki."
