A Christmas Carol at Bracken Dane by Arthur Hughes Postcard
This ambitious portrait was commissioned in 1878 by James Leathart, a Newcastle industrialist and one of Arthur Hughes’ most important patrons. It depicts eleven of Leathart’s thirteen children at their home in Low Fell, Gateshead. Writing to Leathart, Hughes describes his aspirations for the painting, “… I hope to put some more work on it and make it fairer to look upon. I feel quite hopeful that it is a good thing… a symphony in green-blue.” (Text courtesy of Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Gallery 17)
