The Papal Coats of Arms are an insignia and official symbol of each Pope's pontificate, which has its own personal coat of arms, and actually appear in works of architecture, publications, decrees and documents of various kinds. Popes often adopted the coat of arms of their own family, if it existed, or composed a coat of arms with symbolism that indicated their own ideal of life, or a reference to past events, or to elements related to their purpose as Supreme Pontiff. Sometimes they added some variants to the coat of arms they had adopted as Bishops.
