M1A1 Thompson Sub Machine gun The year is 1918 and the American firearm designer John Thompson has created a new sub machine gun. The American Military designate it the M1928A1 Sub Machine Gun. Design developments call for a smaller pistol calibre round to be used. With John Brownings very successful 1911 chambers in .45ACP, Thompson chambers his design on .45 ACP. The theory of the day was that a sub machine gun could replace some of the bolt action rifles of the period. By 1938 the next generation of the Thompson was ready for the American military. They designate it M1A1 Sub Machine gun. With a rate of fire of 625 rounds per minute. the gun is well suited for detouring infantry. By laying down cover fire the ability for troop advancing forward was enhanced. Thompson’s firearm was used all and over the world. The firearm used 20/30 round stick magazines and a 50 round drum. The drum was not a favourite of the troops. It was heavy and rattled as you moved forward and sometimes could give your position away. With it’s iconic design, it’s still easily recognized over a hundred years later.
